All About Potteries
The history of pottery can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. Egyptians used to store ceramics in their graves. The inscriptions on these clay ships were ancient hieroglyphs, reflecting the emphasis Egyptians placed on life beyond death. Pottery is made from clay after it has been formed, dried, and heated in a box. The use of a glaze is often used to give a finished look. Clay may be found all throughout the world, and preservatives are put in to give it distinct properties when heated. Pottery cannot be made solely from clay; it also requires the addition of other materials. To give them a variety of styles, the clay is placed in a mold and removed once it has dried completely. The methods for manufacturing pottery change from one artist to the next. Kentucky artists, for example, may use a radically different manner of manufacturing pottery than artists from other states.
